A pool is where you play everyone in the table once

Knock-out is where you play your opponent , if you win you progress to the next round if you lose its the end of your tournament.

Knock out and pool is where the players are arranged into small groups , usually 4 players the top two progress to the next round. Depending on the number of players you may go into another group... or it may be knock out. Semi finals obviously are knock out.
